Building Curriculum

Marie-Therese La Rocque

Through this article of "Curriculum Policy and the Politics of What Should be Learned in Schools" by Ben Levin, I learned a lot about how curriculum is made and processed. I was surprised and kind of sad to read that curriculum is influenced by public policy. "Public policy govern all aspects of Education" (Levin, 2007) which I think is not the right way to approach curriculum. The people who have the least status have the least influence on political decision making. The only voices that are heard for Education making are the rich, high class politicians and leaders that have the privilege to implement what children get taught in schools. Also the concerning part about this is that politicians are very influenced by society since voters guide everything. If society does not like what a government party does, they will be ruled out. Which is how the government works meaning that is how Education curriculum can be built, it is mostly what the people find important. This can be good but the fact that I read in the article stating politicians find what people believe is important instead of what they believe is actually important (Levin, 2007). This is concerning because also stated in the article says that most people say they believe in something when they do not fully know the research and knowledge on the topic. For example the sex education curriculum that blew up. I guarantee some of the people did not read the sex education curriculum and just went along with others. This can be detrimental to our curriculum.

I think, and I bet most people in the Faculty of Education, that teachers, professors, Ministery of Education, and educators should mainly be in charge of implementing what is taught in schools. They know best because parents become to emotional and protective in what is taught and politicians/high leaders of society will go with whatever society says.

The Treaty Education Curriculum is designed with a ride range of Indigenous groups and elders. The creators of the curriculum made sure they included everyones voice in the say of what should be taught, which is important and I wish that is how most curriculums are made. This curriculum is detailed because it is just as important as other curriculums and should be in every high school and elementary schools. It states that students will understand Treaty relationships, recognize interconnectedness, acknowledge past history of Indigenous people, and appreciate the Treaties. This is bringing awareness of Canadian history and allowing for reconciliation. This curriculum needs to be implemented in every school. Great wisdom is regulated in this curriculum.
