Marie-Therese La Rocque

Aspiring Elementary School Teacher

About Me

About Me

My name is Marie-Therese La Rocque and I am in my first year of Education to become an elementary school teacher. I am the second and last born child in my family as I have an older sister Chantelle of 24 years. My family are very much animal lovers so Chantelle and I have always grown up with a dog in the house. We have realized on our third pup Willow that they are truly healers, for humans.

I have a strong passion for travelling and seeing the world because growing up I never had the luxury. Although nothing will ever compare to the cabin we have had in the family that was passed down from my father's side. It is a cozy little cabin located on White Bear reserve surrounded by birch trees, wild flowers, and a beautiful lake. The cabin has and will remain my forever favourite place in this world. It has shaped my respect of the land and my love for the outdoors. Lately it seems like I can never spend as much time there as I crave now that I am a young adult starting my own life. Although we did not go on many vocational trips, I will be forever grateful to my parents for supplying me a safe haven.

Because of the cabin my summers were taken up by the water and summer air. I never went into any clubs or sports because of it which is okay because I am not a competitive person. With my time I spend outside on walks and sitting in the grass, writing down my thoughts and experiences, and being around my beloved friends. I have been with my two friends since the start of elementary school. Since the three of us have grown up together from a young age we have experienced everything together. I believe the deep connection my friends and I share growing up together has shaped the importance of relationships in my life.

My parents have raised me with intentions of teaching to accept others in all forms. I find myself being more of an easy-going person, possibly because of my relaxing childhood. I developed an extreme goofy side from my father who is an incredible elementary school teacher himself. He has been my most inspiration to become one. I have grown into a person I am proud to be, with room to continue to bloom.

Background

I believe the innocence of not knowing how difficult the world can be is beautiful. I would do anything to re-live my childhood, I value it incredibly. At a young age I was curious about my father being a teacher. Not only was my father a teacher but my aunt, uncle, cousin, and grandparents are as well. I grew up surrounded by teachers and that is a substantial reason why I decided to become one. It brought a cheeky smile to my face when I listened to the stories my father came home with to share about his students. I noticed that not only did I admire him but so did all his students. It must be fulfilling knowing that one can impact a child's life greatly for the best.

I have always found joy being surrounded by children. They generate a certain contentment and laughter that makes me want to immerse in their atmosphere. I have struggled with the idea of growing up since I turned sixteen, even though I was still such a child. I believe that it is important to still carry those child-like qualities with us through out life. It keeps us young, energized, imaginative, and open minded. I feel like being in an elementary classroom again would make my life too, feel fulfilled. Especially because this time I enter I will be the educator. Teaching in an elementary school would bring back the feeling of comfort and freedom that I felt when I was attending elementary school myself. I think that it is important for me to stay connected with my younger self and be able to let her flourish when I am teaching. I am still growing as a person and I look forward to seeing where my education will bring me.

I find beauty when children discover the world themselves. I find beauty in the way children see the world when young. Everything is brighter, more colourful, and simpler.

A poem by Robert William Service reads:

When I go on my morning walk,

because I'm mild.

if I be in the mood to talk

I choose a child.

Id rather prattle with a lass of tender age

than converse in the high-brow class

with college sage.

I love the touch of silken hand

that softly clings;

in old of age I understand

lifes little things.

I love the lips of tiny tongue

and trusting eyes;

these are the joys that keep me young

as daylight dies.

For as to second childhood I draw gently near,

with happy heart I see the why

child are dear.

so wise professor, go your way, -

I am beguiled

to wistful loving by the gay

laugh of a child.
